Meet our team

Our directors and executives are highly qualified and play vital roles in ensuring the success of our business.

Our committee members are selected to ensure a diverse representation of age, gender and ethnic diversity. In addition, they possess a range of expertise and knowledge that is sufficient to provide guidance and oversight.

Board Committees:

  • Executive Committee, assuming direct responsibility for operational management.
  • Investment Committee, responsible for making decisions regarding the acquisition of debt portfolios.
  • Remuneration Committee, making decisions on the remuneration of the executives and employees.

Board Members

David McAlpin (also known as Dave) has over 15 years’ experience both in South Africa and international retail. He served as Chief Executive Officer of Principa Decisions at Transaction Capital and served as the Chief Executive of Forza Group for four years. He has also held various senior positions within the Massmart and the Wooltru Group.

Dave holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from Rhodes University, an MBA from the University of Cape Town and is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (A.C.M.A.).

Carl holds a B.Acc and B. Acc (Hons) degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand, and is a Chartered Accountant (SA) as well as a Chartered Management Accountant (ACMA). After completing his articles at Coopers and Lybrand (now PricewaterhouseCoopers), he remained with this company for a year as audit manager. In 1999 Carl decided to relocate to the UK where he joined the Insurance and Investment Management Audit division of PwC in London as an audit manager, working on key clients such as CGU, now Aviva. After two years Carl decided to move out of audit and was invited to join the newly formed specialist financial services team within Transaction Services of PwC London. Carl conducted due diligence services (buy side and sell side) and other related mergers and acquisition consulting in UK, Europe and US for the next three years. In 2003 Carl decided to return to South Africa and after travelling around the world for 6 months arrived back in November 2003. Carl joined MBD as Group Financial Manager and was promoted to Chief Financial Officer in 2005. In 2008 Carl was promoted to Commercial Executive and was tasked with looking at various aspects of the business both strategically and operationally in order to ensure future growth and profitability. In 2010 Carl assumed the role of Executive Head of the Legal Collections division. Carl attended the Executive leadership program at Harvard Business School, Boston, USA in 2011. In 2014, Carl was appointed as head of MBD Revenue and promoted to Managing Director of Transaction Capital Recoveries in January 2016.
Dineo has over 19 years’ experience in Human Resources. She holds a Diploma in Human Resources, a qualification in the Construction Management Programme from Stellenbosch University, a BA in Human Resources and Economics from Wits University, a Masters in Management and Innovation, awarded with distinction, and a postgraduate qualification in the Executive Development Programme, both from Wits Business School. Her previous roles spanned across the Financial Services, Research and Development and the Insurance industry. Dineo came from Group Five, a leading African construction, concessions and manufacturing group. She was the HR Director of Group Five’s Engineering and Construction (Building) and was later promoted to Cluster HR Director within the Investment and Concessions Cluster, overseeing Eastern Europe, North America and Africa. Dineo is passionate about unleashing potential and developing people, as well as creating a positive environment where people are engaged, motivated and inspired to bring the best results.
Rob has over 25 years’ experience in the IT field, and has a BSC in Engineering, Metallurgy and a MBA, all from Wits. He gained his early experience running metallurgical extraction plants in the gold industry, and constructing chemical and water treatment plants. Rob then moved into the IT space with SA Breweries as their Marketing Sales and Distribution IT Manager. Thereafter, he joined JSE-listed USC Software where he held various positions, finally serving as CEO from 2009 – 2014. Rob joined from IT giant Business Connexion, where he served as General Manager of Business Solutions. Rob is a specialist in executive management and strategy, putting people first under the adage: ‘Investment in people produces an exponential return.


Robert studied Business Science at the University of Cape Town, obtaining his Honors in Finance prior to becoming a Chartered Accountant. He completed his articles at Grant Thorton Kessel Feinstein before working in a telecommunications group. As Group FD of the Vestacor Group, Robert was involved in the acquisition, structuring and repositioning of various assets within the retail and property sectors of Southern Africa and Europe. In 2010 he co-founded and listed Vividend Income Fund Limited on the JSE as a SA REIT. As CEO of Stuttafords Stores and Stuttafords International Fashion, he facilitated the turnaround and repositioning strategy of the businesses.Robert has served as a non-executive director on various Boards, and has chaired various audit, risk and investment committees within the Vestacor Group over the years. He has seasoned experience in financial structuring, debt restructuring, risk management, acquisition analysis and deal formulation.
Stephan joined MBD in December 2007 after spending three and a half years at First National Bank. At FNB Stephan was Head of Sales & Solutions in the Private Label Department responsible for new business growth and input to the strategic direction of the division. As he is from a vendor background, his focus is on providing practical operational solutions through 3rd party outsourcing and has a strong client service view and a detailed understanding of operational environments. Prior to FNB Stephan headed up an African Bank subsidiary providing working capital solutions to SMME’s. Stephan honed his analytical, financial and strategic skills in his time as an equities analyst with CSFB and an actuarial assistant with Liberty Life.

Executive Committee

Jabu jointly looks after the company’s NPL portfolio acquisitions within the Capital Solutions business unit. He joined TCRS in 2019 as the Head of Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A), where he was responsible for leading the organisation in the M&A growth strategy. His previous work experience includes the execution of M&A transactions at Barclays Africa within the Corporate Development division. He also worked in the Investment Banking division at Standard Bank, advising corporate executives cross various sectors on M&A transactions. Jabu is a CA (SA) and has a Bachelor of Business Science (Finance honours) degree from the University of Cape Town. He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting, a CFA Certification with the CFA Institute and an MBA from GIBS.
John has over 30 years’ experience across all fields of retail and commercial banking, with particular focus on the credit and operational risk domain. He was Principal Consultant and Head of Collections and Recoveries product role at Principa before being appointed as the General Manager: Collections and Recoveries for TCR in 2016. John recently served as the Head: Group Collections and Debt Recovery Homechoice from 2016 – 2019.  He holds a B.Com from Unisa, credit-related diplomas and successfully completed an Accelerated Management Course at London Business School.
B Paed (Arts) University of Durban Westville Maheshini has had numerous years of experience working in the credit, data and collections industry through employment by TransUnion ITC and MBD. Maheshini spent 11 years at TransUnion ITC, a leading international credit bureau. Roles fulfilled whereas Commercial Business Reporter for the first two years. She then was involved as Training Manager for four years before taking up a role as Key Accounts Manager. In 2000 Maheshini joined MBD in a similar role and now heads up Client Relationship Management and Customer Care. Responsibilities include client management, relationship building, contract negotiations and new business development. A key aspect of this is ensuring client deliverable and service levels are met and reporting to clients. Furthermore, with her significant industry experience Maheshini is involved with input into client collection strategies and managing projects specific to clients. Maheshini attended the Executive leadership program at Stellenbosch in 2012.
Ntando leads the company’s operations and performance outputs for Customer Services and Quality Assurance as well as managing the Johannesburg Agency industry verticals in Operations. He joined TCR in 2007 as an Agent, and through the years since he started held numerous leadership positions including Branch Manager of Rustenburg, Klerksdorp and later the position of GM of Emfuleni. In 2016 he was promoted to GM of Operations and in 2019 to the Head of Agency in Johannesburg leading a high performing team. During this time he was responsible for internal revenue budgets and meeting client expectations across industry verticals: Banking, Telecoms, Specialised Lending, Public Sector and B2B. Ntando holds a certification through GIBS in Management Development and will be completing his MBA through the aforementioned institution as well.
Ruan served articles at JD Hill & Co. After completing his articles and in 2004, he moved to Altech a division of Altron Limited as internal auditor. Within 6 months he moved to the position of Group Financial Accountant (2006 to 2008). Ruan joined MBD in 2008 as financial analyst moving into Group Financial Manager in 2013. He was appointed as Finance Executive in February 2016. Bcompt (Hons), Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting, CA (SA).
Ruben holds a Bsc Honours in Computer Science from Wits, as well as various data strategy accreditations. He has extensive experience in debt collection projects within the telecoms industry, and has delivered solutions across all the major telecoms providers in South Africa. His understanding of technology strategies, retail experience and working for Deloitte, Accenture and Standard Bank has led to many successful ecommerce initiatives and helped drive tailored digital strategies for clients.
Shandu leads the company’s Public Sector division, where she is responsible for business and revenue generation from public sector entities in line with organisational goals and objectives. Shandu’s strategic and client management skills has been integral to success of the division. She took up the role of key accounts executive of the public sector in October 2020. Prior to joining Transaction Capital Recoveries, Shandu held management positions at Standard Bank, Nedbank and ABSA. In 2006 she joined the City of Johannesburg as Deputy Director of VIP and Key Accounts where she was part of the team that developed and implemented the Customer Segmentation strategy and the Debt Collection strategy for South Africa’s most important metropolitan municipality. She joined Transaction Capital Recoveries as Senior Manager Customer Relationship Management within the public sector directorate in 2015 and progressed to Key Accounts Executive of the entire division in October 2020. During her time at TCR, Shandu has been responsible for managing the customer relationship management and customer services team within Public Sector. She has been instrumental in developing strategy, promoting growth, retaining key clients, improving processes and quality standards, and increasing revenue for the TCR business. Shandu holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Marketing from the University of South Africa and a National Diploma in Banking from University of Johannesburg. She is currently studying towards a Post Graduate Diploma in Management Practise through Henley SA.

With over 20 years of experience in Information Technology (IT), Thivagaran started his IT career in 1999 as a web and software applications developer. He joined MBD in 2003 as a senior SQL developer and through the years, has held various leadership roles within the IT Department contributing to the design, development, management and alignment of goals to the overall growth of the organisation. His responsibilities include but are not limited to, driving organizational growth, performance, profitability, and expanding intellectual property through data-driven and technology decisions. Acting as a change agent, capable of orchestrating transformative strategy, managing risk, compliance and security. Championing digital transformation and innovation with a focus on developing robust, flexible, scalable and affordable solutions to ensure organizational competitive advantage. With his immense knowledge and experience, he has led the IT Department as an acting Chief Information Officer (CIO) since April 2013 before officially taking on the role of CIO in February 2014. Along with multiple Microsoft certified accreditations and leadership development programs, Thivagaran holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Business Informatics (B.Com BIS) from UNISA; a Post Graduate Diploma in General Management (PGDip) from the University of Pretoria’s Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) and a Master in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Pretoria’s Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS).
